"I-I think something's happened...." Hutch ... came to the rumpled bed and sat down. "I saw some flashes in the sky, Starsk. ... And then the ground...rumbled. The wind came up... I don't know what to think. But something tells me, deep down, that this was it." He looked at his partner. Starsky was taking him seriously. "And L.A.," he went on, feeling the awesome weight of it for the first time, "maybe the whole West Coast might be—" He lay back, raking his fingers through his hair.
Starsky got up then, and ran barefoot and dressed only in his navy-blue longjohns outside. ..."Hutch! C'mere!"
Hutch ran outside. The sun had risen in the east, as it should. But there was an unearthly glow in the west, above the trees. Another sun or the reflection of hell.
Starsky moved close beside him, then, poignantly, turned and slid one arm around him. "Oh, God, Hutch. What— What if it's really true?" He looked up, breathing hard, eyes so blue and wide Hutch could have drowned in them.
