"I want to tell you now," Starsky whispered in a tone that was usually reserved for the bedroom....
"Starsky," Hutch protested.... "You're in the middle of a public place, remember?"
"So what," Starsky's voice shrugged. "No one can hear me." There was a short pause and then the voice that could seduce Hutch in a heartbeat was back. "You know you want me to, Hutch. You know you want to hear all about it."
Starsky heard the phone ringing while he was still in the driveway. That's gotta be Hutch. He'll be pissed as hell, but I don't care.
He snared the receiver, only to hear the solid click in his ear as the line went dead.
Hadda be Hutch. I was supposed to call him soon as I left the Pits. That was three hours ago. He's pissed.
And the evening had started out so great-Hutch was supposed to be coming home tomorrow. Now they had no idea how long this trial would take, how long they might be separated.

Hutch looked back at him. Starsky expected more arguments or a small sampling of the Hutchinson temper, but the blond only smiled softly. "I know."

Finally, Hutch asked a soft question. "What do you wish, Starsk? What can I do for you?"
Starsky did not answer right away, but his arms pulled tighter. At last, in a wistful voice, he murmured... "I just... wish I could feel something other than the pain for awhile."
Starsky knew before he opened his eyes.
