The partners have a Sunday morning discussion.

Hutch held his gaze. “Just give me some time, okay?” That was all he asked for. Time to cut his heart out and stomp on it until it was just a worthless pump. Nobody needed it anyway.
Mason saw the man that called himself his father pulling into the school's parking lot. Mason turned pale and staggered. He had often moved twice in one week and he was scared that he was going to have to move today. He knew this was his chance. He knew Hutch's dad would understand. He knew he had to talk to him and it had to be right now.
Of all the girls for Starsky to take out, why did it have to be that blonde meter maid ... ah ... ah ... ah ... O'Riley? It was bad enough that he stomped out of here mad, but O'Riley. "That's hitting below the belt, partner."
He wrapped himself around his partner -- always his partner, no matter where they were and what they did and who they became -- and Starsky laughed and hugged himself with sheer joy. Hutch dreams...
This takes place after Sweet Revenge. Starsky is home and confess to Hutch what he saw while he was clinically dead.
It's Christmas and Starsky's not doing too well.
They say hearing is the last to go.
In the aftermath of Terry's murder (Starsky's Lady), Hutch makes his own feelings known.

Starsky... received the strangest call from Hutch's mother. "Yes, Mrs. Hutchinson. What can I do for you?"
"Well, I just received a phone call from my very inebriated son, professing his total and undying love for you," she said angrily. "What do you think about that, Mr. Starsky?"
"What? Hutch said he loves me?" Starsky asked in astonishment.
"What have you done to him?" Helen shouted. Her voice shook with fury.
For a few minutes, all Starsky could process was that Hutch loved him, was in love with him. He loves ME!
Wait. Did she say Hutch was drunk?
Hutch's parents visit unexpectedly.
Hutch is still recovering from his heroin ordeal. He is getting stronger and finding his way back into his role as detective sergeant, undercover. Just as well because an old friend from the boy's past is back and Starsky will need all of Hutch's reserves and more.

I know kid!fic isn't the most popular genre of slash fiction, but given how much these two guys slept around on the show, it's really not beyond the realm of belief to acknowledge that a child could certainly have been conceived at some point. This theme gave me the opportunity to explore it more.

I wrote this little snippet as "homework" after attending a workshop on fanfiction writing at SHareCon 2010. Us "new recruits" in particular were encouraged to do an exercise, practicing dialogue, to build mini-scenes into a coherent narrative.
Here, the boys are out and about - Hutch is over-thinking and Starsky observes his partner.

It wasn't the last thing he expected to find upon opening his bedroom door. It hadn't exactly entered his thoughts before now but then again, it wasn't totally out of the realm of possibility either. Well of course it wasn't, he was watching it first hand, so to speak. And he was getting very turned on by the sensual display in front of him.
It's raining and Starsky is grouchy.
"Man, you were always a moody mother, but this is gettin' ridiculous," the black man grumbled, then began a long discourse with the cat who glared steadily at him out of slitted eyes. "...feels like Papa Theodore laid the curse on me. You two should've hot-footed it before he disappeared outta prison. ...Aunt Minnie's workin' on it, too--next full moon, she says, 'n it'll be all over."
"Hutch. This is Alf, our house guest until Bob Chambers gets back from D.C."
"But he's a dog!"
"Hutch, this is not just a dog. This is a purebred Doberman! And he's a trained police dog."
